Eagles end Port's season
THE Eagles ruthlessly ended Port Adelaide's season at Alberton, kicking the final seven goals of the game to steal a 23-point win.

The Magpies entered the final minor round game in fifth spot and remained there for most of the day before a final quarter meltdown left their season in tatters.

Port's loss, coupled with South's upset win against Norwood, saw the Magpies drop to sixth on the ladder.

But it could have been so different.

Port had one foot in the elimination final while leading by three goals approaching time on in the third term.

They had held the Eagles goal-less for 40 minutes, had a vocal crowd behind them and would come home with the wind in the final term.

But three goals in five minutes to the Eagles levelled scores at the final change and Michael Godden's men took over in the last quarter to warm up for this week's qualifying final clash with Norwood in emphatic fashion.

"It's about maturity. The good sides win those games," Godden said.

"I thought our second half reflected where we should be at."

The Eagles will regain ruckman Craig Parry (knee), centre half forward Adam Grocke (ankle) and Crows-listed Jared Petrenko this Sunday.

Godden said he was satisfied with his side's form.

"I'm very happy with the way we're moving the ball. Our last seven games have been as good as any since I've been at the club," he said.

In contrast, Port joins West, North and Sturt as this season's also-rans.

The skill errors that have plagued the Magpies' season were again evident as the Eagles regularly made them pay on the rebound.

But Port also didn't help its chances with unaccountability inside its defense 50m, conceding several uncontested marks to the Eagles' small forwards.

Matt Goldsworthy, Travis Lane, Chris Hall and Jarred Allmond regularly found space in the forward half and combined to kick seven goals in Grocke's absence.

Port began the game with intent and did well to limit its deficit to just two goals at quarter time after kicking into the breeze.

The Magpies then began moving the ball with more purpose and slammed on five consecutive goals to snatch a two goal lead at half time.

Sam Gray and Steven Summerton were among the major ball winners as the Eagles appeared to suffer from disinterest.

But the Eagles have too much pride to give up without a fight and with Scott Lewis and Luke Jarrad becoming more influential they worked their way back into the match.

The Eagles dominated the opening 10 minutes of the final quarter, adding two goals, to take control of the game.

Port rallied, but two set shot misses to Judd Robson and Josh Thurgood ruined any chance of a comeback.

"We were really happy at half time, I thought the second quarter was great," Port coach Tony Bamford said.

"But there was a clear gap between skill efficiency in both sides today."

Port's chances weren't helped by the absence of ruckman Ivan Maric, who stood out of the side because of the cloud surrounding his AFL future, and gun forward Luke Harder who was injured at training mid-week.
