Chris Scott to coach Geelong

Scott Gullan From: Herald Sun October 17, 2010 7:01PM 4 comments

Chris Scott is set to be officially named as Geelong's new coach after being an assistant at Fremantle Dockers for the past few seasons.

The appointment of the former Brisbane Lions premiership defender will be officially announced tomorrow morning.

Scott defeated Gold Coast assistant Ken Hinkley and current Cats assistant coach Brenton Sanderson for the job.

Hinkley and Sanderon were both informed yesterday of the decision to go with the Fremantle assistant as Mark Thompson's replacement.

Scott's twin brother, Brad, has excelled in his first season as senior coach with North Melbourne.

After going close to snaring the Port Adelaide job this year, Scott, 34, signals a new era for Geelong with the club hierarchy electing for major change rather than a tweaking of the current system which has been so successful over the past four years.

Scot retired in 2007 after 215 games in 13 seasons with Brisbane, where he won the 2001 and 2002 premierships. He missed the third flag in 2003 through injury.

He has been with Fremantle since 2008.

Both the brothers were tipped as top coaching material by former teammates, who admired their preparation, work ethic and knowledge of how the game worked tactically.

It is the first time in AFL history - and possibly Australian sporting history - that twins will have coached against one another.

Brothers have opposed each other as coaches: Norm Smith was in charge at Melbourne while his brother Len was coaching Fitzroy.
