Eagles vs West Game wash up

Post by Mickyj on Sun May 02, 2010 6:40 pm

Was a very hard game to watch today.Westies very ugly game style stifled the Eagles.
finally they built a wall but it didn't hold up Westies.
Last quarter CICA took a chance in the backlines which lead to a goal by Grocke(I think).that was the turning point.Eagles went about 5 goals up and then West came back.eagles fought back and held onto the lead.

Fortress Woodville in 2010 3 games 3 wins Eagles (ugly as they were Wink )

Thought Grocke was outstanding - having his best season (4 very good or better games, one bad one). Lewis is becoming a very important cog managing to get through traffic with pace. Welcome back James Stewart with a very good first up effort. Good to see Treeby have a good one.
Although Seb Guilhaus didn't have an opposition Ruckman of note, his body positioning at contests and defensively is improving with each game. Disappointing he is not reaping the full reward yet because he's getting his hands cleanly to 4-5 marks and not making them stick- when that happens ...... At 23 years, plenty of upside.
At present, we can give the recruiting committee top marks and best results since 2006 (Dabrowsky,Grocke,Cooper,Jarrad) with Lewis, Guilhaus, Welsh and Stewart playing well and Parry still to come.
Expect an unchanged team for the game against North - the Power are likely to try and squeeze Motlop and Krakouer into their team so unlikely to have spots available for Salter and Broadbent this week. Noted with interest that Schulz had another quiet one and big Stewart from North Adelaide might soon be squeezing him back to the Eagles
Interesting that Luke Thompson is developing into a handy tall Forward - played very well today in the 2s

Doesn't matter how the games are won, just that we won the 2 points. Yesterday, Terry Hutton (u18s coach) wasn't happy with the 2nd half of the u18s and said so after the game and also happy that we won the game and got the 2 points.

Ok folks, I know we want to forget last week but some of you may be interested in best players given by the club.
Ressies:
1st Duane Schultz
2nd James Stewart
3rd Jarrad Wright
League:
1st Nick Salter
2nd Adam Grocke
3rd Seb Guilhaus

Now for today against Westies
Ressies:
1st Aaron Day
2nd Luke Thompson
3rd Jarrad Redden
4th Leyton McMahon
5th Todd Culley
League:
1st Adam Grocke - also MVP as chosen by the players
2nd James Stewart
3rd Seb Guilhaus
4th Luke Powell

The ressies did a great job getting over the line today as we only had 16 fit players in the last quarter.
Now for the Roosters next Saturday

A couple of good results today...even though they weren't pretty games both sides found a way to win....which is the most important thing!

Just on the reserves game...think Cody Hicks' committment to the contest which saw him (and one of the westies guys) clash that hard that it could be heard from the grandstand is one of the biggest hits I have ever seen...both boys very lucky to come away with probably a few stitches and a sore head!

Eags found a way to win today. Hands still not 'clean' enough yet.

Two sensational highlights of the match against West were the runs of James Stewart and Adam Grocke. Great to see James back - too much talent to be playing in a lower competition. Adam having a great season sofar, thought he was by far the most efficient user of the ball. Still dumbfounded why Fuller continually dropped Grocke midseason in the last couple of years.

Have to agree with God's comments in the paper this morning.Salter's defensive efforts very poor in the first half in particular, will probably have to do some work in this area as the ball comes out of our forward line too easily at times due to some forwards lack of chasing.Great game by Grocke.Love his attack on the footy or opposition player with the footy at the moment.Looking forward to next three weeks, wiil need to improve against Glenelg and Centrals but I suspect there is plenty of improvement in this team yet.

Eagles claim top spot

* Warren Partland
* From: AdelaideNow

Woodville-West Torrens rose to the top of the premiership ladder with an 18-point victory over West Adelaide in a scrappy encounter at Woodville Oval.

The Eagles took advantage of a Bloods outfit which turned the ball over far too often to grab their fourth win of the season and take spot from Central District courtesy of superior percentage.

Neither side could claim the accendency in the first half with seven lead changes in the second quarter a reflection of the tight battle.

The Eagles secured a 19-point lead when they dominated much of the third term before two late goals cut the deficit for the Bloods to just seven points going into the final quarter.

The Bloods often squandered possession with sloppy skills and the Eagles punished the visitors' mistakes to build a 30-point buffer when Nick Salter goaled 17 minutes into the final term.

But the Bloods fought back with three goals in three minutes to trail by just 11 points, only to have more turnovers relax the pressure for the Eagles.

``Sometimes a 16-day break can work as a disadvantage,'' Bloods coach Andrew Collins said. ``It was a scrappy game and it was about the team which was more desperate than the other. Their tackling and hard ball gets were better than ours.

``It is going to be disheartening to watch on video.''

Full Match Results

Eagles vs West Adelaide

By Peter Argent

This contest between the Eagles and the Bloods on a pristine autumn Sunday afternoon at the start of May had plenty of intrigue. It was a game that had an abundance of ebbs and flows.

At one stage during the middle of the final term, Woodville West Torrens had a comfortable five goal lead, but the margin was reduced to less than two, before Nick Salter’s second major ensured a fourth victory this year. With Leigh Treeby’s goal after the siren, victory on home soil was gained by 18 points.

At the end of the first term with a slight breeze towards the social club end, the Eagles actually were three points behind, but gained a small 10 point ascendancy to take into the second half.

Seven points up at lemons, the Eagles looked to have broken the game open early in the final stanza, before West’s late revival.

“I didn’t think we were over the line when we were five goals up during the last quarter, as we’ve been leaking a few goals in red time,” coach Michael Godden said. “But the group hung tough and got the job done.” “I saw this game as a real 50/50 going into the contest.”

“It’s fair to say it was a difficult day at the office and we still have plenty of improvement to go on our structures and game style.”

Adam Grocke was the premier forward in the contest, marking strongly and being a strong target in a two-goal “best on ground” performance. James Stewart returned to senior football for his 17th league match, excelling as a small running defender.

New recruit this year Seb Guilhaus was competitive all day in ruck and Luke Powell’s endeavour and commitment to the task is among the best in SANFL football.

Evergreen veteran Justin Cicolella continues to be his brilliant creative self and captain Mark McKenzie stood up at critical times of the game.

Power listed player Matthew Broadbent, another new Eagle in 2010 Scott Lewis and teenager Angus Rowntree also had a sizable influence on the contest.

Six different players, Nick Salter, Grocke, YP export Matthew Goldsworthy, Scott Welsh, the versatile Stewie Hill and Jay Cheep all kicked two goals each.

The Round 7 match is another important clash against a desperate North Adelaide side on home soil at Woodville Oval.

I generally found the game not all that good; once again brought on by negative tactics (which was expected). So often we see sides look much better when they try to take the game on but still worry about not letting the opposition score first.
